We provide a friendly and totally reliable professional service, producing images of the very highest quality.  A wide range of package options and services are offered.  If preferred, we can offer a bespoke service to suit the needs and aspirations of your educational establishment.  Apart from the direct collection of orders from the students, at Stuart Hay Photography we take care of as much of the administration as possible, thus reducing the need of staff input as part of the process.

Studio

When we are commissioned to take individual portraits of students, we usually set up a temporary studio consisting of studio lighting, canvas background and posing stool.  For our regular clients, we can by arrangement and where applicable, use a canvas background which compliments the school's uniform colours.

Proof Cards

For each student, a number of different images are taken, which are subsequently edited and colour-corrected.  A proof card containing the best 3 images is then produced.  Students are supplied with a pack containing the proof card, price list, order form and return envelope.  Parents may then choose the digital images and/or print packages that they’d like to purchase from the proof card.

The educational establishment is supplied with a CD containing a full set of low resolution images taken of all of the students.  These images are often used for record keeping purposes.

Digital Images & Print Packages

For individual portraits, the educational establishment specifies a single fixed package option which is offered to all of the students.  The package can be compiled of high resolution digital images, prints or a combination of both.  Digital images are usually supplied on a CD.  A wide range of print sizes are available.  When print packages are specified, the prints are mounted in high quality folders which are available in a variety of colours.

When the orders are delivered, a reprint price list is enclosed in case additional digital images or prints are required in the future.

Indoor & Outdoor Photography

Usually group shots tend to be taken outdoors utilising, depending upon the size of the group, a range of chairs, benches and staging to arrange the students into several rows so that they can be seen clearly.  When requested, or in inclement weather conditions, group photographs can be taken indoors in a suitable room.  In such circumstances, the students are lit using studio lighting.  Depending upon the size of the group, a range of chairs, benches and staging is used in order to arrange the students into several rows so that they can be seen clearly. 

For small groups such as sports teams, forms and tutor groups, copyright protected proof prints are supplied which can be displayed at the school.  From the proof prints students choose the digital images and/or the prints they wish to purchase.

Stuart Hay Photography is a digital based business.  Only the finest quality professional digital cameras are used.  To enable images of the very highest technical quality to ultimately be produced, all images are captured in RAW format, edited and subsequently fully colour-corrected prior to converting them to jpeg images.  The RAW images and the jpeg images, that are used for the production of all orders, are kept on our computer systems for a maximum of 3 years.  We are more than happy to answer any queries you may have regarding image capture and are happy to advise you based upon our wealth of experience and your personal preferences, requirements and expectations.

For whole school groups and architectural photography, images can be captured using a large format view camera which captures the images on 5"x4" sheet film.  The benefits of shooting on film include exceptional image quality and the case of architectural photography, the ability to adjust image geometry and perspective within the camera.

The previewing of images will depend upon the type of photography being done.  This could include the creation of a password protected gallery within the Customer Area of our website, the uploading of the images onto the educational establishment's portal or by the supply of copyright protected proof prints.

 

Digital images are available from the photo shoot both in low resolution and in high resolution.  Low resolution images measure 1,000 pixels in the longest dimension @ 72 dpi and are suitable for viewing on a computer monitor, tablet or smart ‘phone and for use on social media.  These images aren’t suitable, or intended, for printing.  High resolution images measure approximately 5,000 pixels in the longest dimension @ 300 dpi and are suitable for printing up to at least 20”x14”.

Images can be purchased individually or as a full set and supplied written to CD, DVD or to a personalised USB stick.  CD's and DVD's may be supplied in an optional leatherette folio which is available in a choice of 27 colours.  The front cover of the folio can be supplied with 2 lines of UV text.  USB sticks are supplied in a leatherette presentation box which is available in 27 colours.  The front cover of the presentation box can be supplied with 2 lines of UV text.

A wide range of print sizes are available.  For individual portraits of students, the school or college can specify the contents of the package they’d like to offer, both in terms of prints sizes and the number to be included.  For group photographs, the school or college may specify the print size that they’d like to offer their students.

Prints are usually supplied in high quality folders or strut mounts which are available in a range of colours.

The Stuart Hay School of Photography is open to everyone interested in learning about the exciting and fascinating subject of photography.  Stuart has been in professional practice since 1986 and throughout this period of time he has gained a wealth of knowledge through practical experience and is now able to impart this knowledge to his students through tutorials, tips, practical demonstrations and workshops.

In schools and colleges, we are available to give tuition in the following ways:

  • The setting up and running of lunchtime and after school photography clubs and societies
  • Assisting with the teaching of photography up to A-level standard
  • The running of practical demonstrations and workshops

Tuition in schools and colleges can be booked on a half term, whole term or academic year basis.  Fees which are based on an hourly rate, are dependent upon the type of educational establishment and its location.
